Period 1 objective/goal for citizenship competence is the following: ¨I understand that based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the National Constitution of Colombia, every person has the right to not be discriminated against.¨ For this task we will watch two videos.
Video One: ¨I Have a Dream...¨is a 17 minute public speech (you will only watch the first 2 minutes) by Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) delivered on August 28, 1963, in which he called for racial equality and an end to discrimination. The speech, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement.
Video Two: ¨The Universal Declaration of Human Rights¨is a short 4 and half minute video that summarizes human rights.
Assignment: After watching both videos reflect on equal rights. Please post a comment answering the following questions:
How do both videos apply to the National Constitution of Colombia? What type of inequality do you find more evident in your city, school, home or country, Colombia? Why do you think people discriminate? Why should we respect all people and not just those who are like us (physically, spiritually, etc)? Finally, do you find inequality unjust why or why not?
